A Common Question

I am surprised by how often I get asked about the music I listen to.  I never thought it would be something people wanted to know.  I talk about things like Nine Inch Nails, Rammstein, KMFDM, and Rob Zombie, but my music playlist isn’t that easy to classify, especially not the playlist I use for writing.  It isn’t a mash up of thousands of songs, although I do own more than 50,000 songs.  It’s actually less than 200 songs, here’s a list that is sort of in alphabetical order by song (as you’ll see, it totally isn’t, but it seems like it is).

  • The Final Match – Oomph! (this is somewhat English version of Das Letzte Streichholz and therefore is technically a duplicate of the same song by the same artist, but not everything translates perfectly from German to English and I love both versions)
  • In The Air Tonight – Phil Collins
  • Whiskey Lullaby – Allison Krauss & Brad Paisley
  • Picture – Sheryl Crow & Kid Rock
  • Smooth Criminal – Michael Jackson
  • Blown Away – Carrie Underwood

  • Pumped Up Kicks – Foster the People
  • Wonderwall – Oasis
  • The Sound of Silence – Disturbed (I love this remake by Disturbed, his voice just does it for me on this song)
  • You’re So Vain – Carly Simon

Other than just music Hadena James likes a lot, you’d be hard pressed to find a common thread between these songs.  And I am possibly the only person on the planet that actually owns Unforgiven II.  And while I like Marilyn Manson, I am not a huge fan of his remake of Sweet Dreams, and Pumped Up Kicks is one of the darkest songs ever made popular, which kinda suits me.  My nephew makes fun of me for Royals.

Some things that are apparent I love duets.  And IGerman music.  There are four German bands not counting KMFDM that I own all their albums.  Oomph!, Eisbrecher, Rammstein, and Wumpscut.

However, these are the songs I can listen to over and over and over and over again and they never break my writing stride.  I can even sing along and never insert a word from the song.  Some of the songs are very dark, some are not, some are humorous (Mein Teil is meant to be a fun song, despite being about cannibalism), some are love songs.

Also, I’ve been known to just stick a song on repeat, especially while setting a tone for a chapter.  Like the first killer chapter was written while I listened to Renegades and Return of the Phantom Stranger on repeat, mainly because I kept getting the song from the killer chapter in Ritual Dreams stuck in my head and those songs sorta chased it away.

Finally, I really do have over 50,000 songs on my computer.  Some bands like Nine Inch Nails, I own everything, others like Ministry, Joy Division, and Elvis Presley are more hit and miss on songs I own. The problem with the size of my music collection is that sometimes if I want to hear a specific song and can’t remember the name or the artist, I have to try to guess it by looking at the list of music I own.
